Course Description
This is a composition course that enables students to generate logical, coherent essays necessary to academic and professional success.
Students will become proficient in research techniques, learn critical thinking and reading skills through expository and persuasive media, and apply these skills to creating original researched essays.
The lab component of this course is designed to assist students in improving and refining their writing and language skills. Students will complete lab activities that enhance their ability to compose logical, well-supported arguments that exhibit grammatical fluency and correct documentation form. Students will meet with composition instructors through individual conferences that address students’ specific writing concerns.
Student Learning Outcomes
Upon satisfactory completion of the course, students will be able to:
- Assert a clear thesis statement directly addressing the topic
- Integrate valid and reliable source material smoothly and effectively into the broader context of the essay according to MLA citation style
- Employ an appropriate voice per the norms and experiences of various audiences
- Demonstrate acceptable college-level control of grammar, mechanics, syntax, organization, development, and coherence
- Analyze the source material within the broader context of the essay
- Identify and employ logos, ethos, and pathos in argument
- Distinguish fact from judgment and knowledge from opinion
- Differentiate relevant from irrelevant support

All readings, handouts, and information will be relayed to you via this online platform. Lab and your Tutoring (NBAS 009) courses will also be via Canvas.
- Note-taking device (i.e. pen and paper or word processing program like Word)
To be successful, take notes every class period and review them regularly to remember information and make successive assignments easier. Do not rely on memory alone!

Course Requirements
- Complete assigned readings and homework before coming to class to join in class discussions in a knowledgeable manner
- Use the appropriate writing format on your assignments. Most will be in MLA 8thedition format. This will be reviewed in class.

- E-mailed assignments are not accepted unless specifically requested.
- Remember to edit for clarity, grammar, usage, and mechanics.
- Please remember that all assignments you complete are considered public. This means I may discuss your work and provide feedback on it in front of class. Use any of these opportunities where I discuss your work out loud as means to improve as a writer. This feedback should help you and your classmates.
o Students who submit work on time and showing clear trying to understand the material shall have the opportunity near the end of the semester to revise any and all essays of their choice for a possible higher grade.
- Rio Hondo College’s lab component requires attendance at all lab sessions, completion of 10 LearningCurve Quizzes in Achieve, and attendance at 4 writing conferences with me.
- Complete more than the required conferences for extra credit.
Attendance & Participation
- To do well in English 101, regular attendance at all classes is expected. Synchronous attendance is best. But, if unable to attend during our regularly scheduled time, watch the recorded session posted on ConferZoom and complete any work assigned before the next class session.
- A student whose unexcused absences exceeds 5 days may be droppe
- Students are expected to actively participate in class for the entire class period, including engaging in small group discussions in breakout rooms, in chat, in polls, etc.
Classroom Etiquette
- Be prepared to learn. Have assignments completed before class.
- Be respectful of your classmates’ opinions and work. All have the right to respectful attention and constructive criticism.
- Students who disrupt or interfere with a class may be dismissed from class.
Academic Honesty
- Plagiarism and any form of Academic Dishonesty will not be tolerated. When caught, the student (or students) involved will receive a failing grade on the assignment and documentation will be sent to the Dean of Student Affair This could possibly result in a drop from the course and/or failing grade.

- The LAC provides a place to study, use computers, print, take study skills workshops to improve your educational effectiveness, and free tutoring for multiple subjects, including chemistry. Library
- The Rio library is located on the 2nd floor of the Learning Resource Center (LRC). You will find books, periodicals, online databases, recordings, and audio-visual materials that will be useful for our class assignments. You may access the library online at www.riohondo.edu/library. You may borrow hotspots, Chromebooks, etc. from the library. Contact them for information.
